Frequently Asked Questions

How Does It Work?
The advanced IPL system gently delivers a precise amount of light energy through your epidermis into the deeper layers of your skin. Instead of removing old layers of skin in order to uncover the newer skin underneath, IPL energy stimulates the production of collagen at deeper layers. As the new collagen forms, it softens the appearance of aging skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are decreased. Brown “age spots” diminish or disappear, and the redness associated with rosacea is dramatically reduced. How Many Treatments?
Depending on the number of conditions being treated, and the severity of your problems, you may require a series of two to four procedures, spaced four weeks apart.By dividing the full procedure into several sessions, we are able to customize treatment according to your specific condition and skin type, producing a more pleasing and natural-looking you with very low risk and no downtime. What Is A Treatment Like?
Prior to treatment, a cool gel will be applied to the skin. You may be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. The smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is then used to administer pulses of light to your face or body. You may a feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band. However, local anesthesia or pain medication is seldom required. It’s quick, easy and virtually painless. On rare occasions, some blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly. How Long Does It Take?
A typical session lasts about 20 minutes. What about Other Areas Besides My Face?
Results are excellent on other sensitive body areas, like the back of your hands, chest and neck. What are the side-effects?
The energies used by the Palomar Starlux IPL are commonly used in a range of cosmetic procedures. They have been proven to be safe. Most people experience no side effects. You may have some short-term reddening of the surrounding skin, so if you have a job where you meet the public you may not want to do this as a lunchtime procedure. However, there is no down time in the sense of a recuperation period. You can return to your regular activities immediately after treatment. In addition, the skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications.

How does Fractional Skin Resurfacing work?
The Fractional Laser delivers light in an array of narrow, focused “microbeams”, to create columns of coagulation (heat) within the skin. The heated tissue within the columns initiates a natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue. This results in a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture. What areas can I have treated?
Fractional treatments can be applied to most areas of the body, including the face, chest, arms, and hands. What makes StarLux Fractional treatments different from other Skin Resurfacing methods?
Some skin resurfacing devices, such as CO2 lasers, use the ablative method, which removes the epidermis and some of the dermis. While good results are eventually seen, the drawbacks include red and raw skin, and a risk of infection for several weeks after treatment.

Other devices use the non-ablative method: sending light pulses into the dermis, while leaving the epidermis intact. This allows quick recovery, but when the light pulses don’t penetrate far into the dermis, the change in skin tone and texture is less effective.

StarLux Fractional Skin Resurfacing offers both superior results and no downtime. The Lux 1540 penetrates deeper into the dermis than competing devices for effective, long-term results. And the Fractional, non-ablative approach stimulates quick healing in the dermis, while leaving the epidermis intact, with no lasting redness. StarLux Fractional treatments are also easier than other technologies, which can involve long prep and clean-up time. Some devices even require that dye be applied to your skin, which is difficult to rinse off after treatment. But StarLux doesn’t require dye or prolonged appointments. Treatments are quick and convenient to your schedule.

Are these treatments safe? Are they painful?
By delivering light as individual pulses of microbeams, the Lux1540 protects the skin from the overheating that can result from many other resurfacing treatments. In addition, the Lux1540 features built-in cooling of the skin, so you feel only minor discomfort during treatment.

The Palomar Lux1540 Fractional™ Laser Handpiece delivers light in an array of high precision microbeams. These microbeams create narrow, deep columns of tissue coagulation that penetrate well below the epidermis and into the dermis, while sparing the tissue surrounding the columns from damage.

The coagulated tissue within the columns initiates a natural healing process that accelerates the formation of new, healthy tissue. Coagulated cellular debris is expelled as the skin is resurfaced.

Throughout the process, the integrity of the stratum corneum is maintained, which protects the tissue from infection as it heals. The result: faster dermal remodeling and skin resurfacing.

What should I expect after a treatment?

You may experience redness, warmth, swelling, or tightness in the treated area, which typically fades within a few hours of treatment. The skin may often have a pinkish tone for 5-7 days. Generally, you can receive a treatment and go back to work or to other activities without any recovery time.

Because the light pulses are confined to narrow columns in the skin, much of the skin is left unaffected and there is a quick healing process. Most people notice positive changes in skin tone and texture within a few days.

A series of 3 to 5 treatments at 4-6 week intervals may be required to achieve the desired results.
