Laser Hair Removal

State of the Art Hair Removal Technology

Lasers have been widely used in aesthetic medicine for over a decade. More recently, techniques have been developed specifically for cosmetic use such as hair removal. The technology in this area has continued to be refined. The light sheer diode laser used at Glow Aesthetic Medicine is a third generation, state of the art system. Laser hair removal safely, effectively, and reliably rids you of unwanted hair and leaves skin feeling soft and smooth without waxing or shaving.

  • Hair’s active growth phase is called anagen. During anagen, the hair contains an abundance of melanin.
  • Catagen is the regression phase when the lower part of the hair stops growing but is not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed.
  • The resting phase is called telogen, during which the old hair falls out in preparation for the development of new hair.

At Glow Aesthetic Medicine, laser hair removal treatments are done in packages to insure the treatment of the hair in its active growth cycle. Often 3 to 6 treatments are recommended. These sessions are done approximately 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the area of the body being treated and on your skin and hair type. Specific recommendations appropriate for your skin type and your particular needs are made for you at the time of your consultation. Frequently Asked Questions

Hair removal is both temporary and permanent. Between treatments, patients will rarely have to shave, tweeze, or pluck. However, if the treatments stop, some of the hair will return in a few months which will be finer and lighter than before. The more treatments, the less hair will ultimately come back. Hair grows in cycles. Some hair follicles are actively growing while others remain in a dormant phase. The laser eliminates only hair follicles in the active growth phase. Approximately four weeks later, additional hair follicles enter the growth phase. Usually 6 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart, are necessary before all hairs can be treated. Occasionally, a touch up treatment is required once a year to maintain results.
The actual treatment time varies, depending on how large an area is treated. It could range anywhere from 20 minutes to over two hours. We will discuss treatment time at your initial free consultation. The heat of the laser is absorbed by actively growing hair. At any given time, about 1/3-1/4 of your hair is actively growing. This means it has a blood supply which can be removed by the laser. Over the course of 4-6 treatments, most of your hair should have been treated during an active phase. Timing of treatments is dependent upon your hair growth cycle.
The Cynosure Apogee Elite Laser and LightShear Laser are FDA approved for hair removal. Treatments are non-invasive and very safe. Rare complications include burning, blistering, and extra pigmentation in the area being treated.
The laser targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair, and thus will not effectively remove hair that is white, grey, blonde or extremely light. Dying light hair will not allow it to be removed by the laser.
Laser hair removal with the light sheer system is very safe. There is a small chance of having a burn-like reaction to your skin. This disappears for most people within 24-48 hours. The best way to avoid an increased reaction is to stay out of the sun for at least 1-2 weeks before and after your treatment. Sun exposure (or tanning) also increases your risk of developing dark spots where you have been treated. We can adjust the laser to compensate for natural pigmentation. New technology allows us to adjust for sun exposure as well.
The laser is most effective on dark hair with light skin. However, many types of ethnic skin can be treated. We recently upgraded our equipment to allow more flexibility in treating all varieties of skin and hair color. The most difficult hair to treat is blond or silver hair. The best thing to do is to come in for a consultation, and let us take a look at your hair. We can even do a free test spot to see how your skin and hair reacts to different laser settings.
Everyone reacts differently, however, most people do very well. The actual laser “shot” feels like the snap of a rubber band. The light sheer has a cooling tip, which allows us to cool your skin during treatment. This advancement has improved the pain factor considerably over previous lasers, which used gel or other barriers to protect the skin. The laser is much more comfortable than electrolysis. We do have a numbing cream that can be purchased prior to treatment if desired.
Prices are based upon zones. An example of a zone is the area around the mouth. The back is 3-5 zones. The best way to know how much it will cost for YOU is to come in for a consultation.

Take some time. Treat yourself. You deserve it.
